I spy

Aleta designed this set to guide children as they begin their discovery of shapes, scale, perspective, and depth.

As children peer through the holes in these whimsical blocks, they are able to play with shadows and perceive how they change based upon the shape of the holes, the surface on which the shadows are cast, and the distance between the light source and the toy.

The toy can be used in a myriad of other ways— as puzzles, as objects to trace over and make designs with. Children see the world differently, in a more creative way and this toy helps children express all that they imagine.

DESCRIPTION:

We use beautifully sanded European beechwood with our toys to ensure they are safe for children. We do not use burnishes because we love the patina the toy acquires over time, but you could apply any natural oil or beeswax from time to time if a more standard finish is desired. Please note wood have different hues so sometimes the color may differ slightly from the one on the image.

This set is composed of nine 65 mm (2.55'') square side pieces and thickness 9 mm (0.35'').  The whole set is conveniently packed in a cotton bag.

Recommended for ages 2 and up.

About ALETA

why wood

We want our children to play with toys made of natural materials which nourish a child’s senses and connect them to nature. We choose wood because is sturdy, safe (non-toxic), environmentally friendly (biodegradable and renewable), durable (wood toys can be easily passed along from generation to generation) and beautiful.

why beech wood

Beech is an important and widely-used hardwood in Europe. Its hardness, wear-resistance, strength, and excellent bending capabilities make this hardwood perfect for our toys. We love its pale cream color, sometimes with a pink or brown hue. Its grain is straight, with a fine to medium uniform texture and it has no characteristic odor. This wood is also used in flooring, boatbuilding, furniture, musical instruments and turned objects.

where does our wood come from

Toys made with sustainable wood grown on managed plantations are the best choice. Our wood comes from responsible German forests and has the FSC and PEFC certifications.

wood finish

We take our time to get a very smooth sanded finish to ensure our toys are safe for children. We do not use burnishes because we love the patina the toy acquires over time. Just on our teethers, which need more protection, we use beeswax as a sealant to keep them in a good shape and condition.

why beeswax

In order to preserve wood from humidity, we choose certified beeswax (the natural substance which bees create and use to build the comb structures inside their hives) because is non-allergenic and non-toxic. It provides protection and a soft, warm finish that produce a matte sheen on the wood.

how to keep our toys clean

Wood has natural antibacterial properties, but once in a while it is necessary to clean wood toys. We recommend you use a gentle cleanser on wooden toys: a simple vinegar and water solution or a mild dish soap and some warm water. Gently wipe down with a washcloth, then allow the toys to air dry.  If there is a really tough stain, use a very fine grit sandpaper to buff it out and follow the wood grain to avoid cross-grain scratches. Coat the toy with beeswax to better preserve and protect it from heat and moisture.
